How to Clean your own Windows

by HOT Window Cleaning on December 22nd, 2010

Cleaning your own windows can be one of the most exhausting jobs ever. Most of the homeowners I speak with that have tried DIY Window Cleaning were not exactly thrilled with the results of thier own efforts. This is because over-the-counter window cleaning products like windex and paper towels really just move the dirt around. Paper towels can't lift the dirt and grime from the window; they just smear it.

Professional Window Cleaners spend hundreds of dollars on just a basic setup, but you can clean your own windows for less than $20 and an afternoon of your time.

Shopping List
  • Small Bucket
  • Cellulose Sponge with light duty (white) scrubber pad.
  • 10 or 12 inch window cleaning squeegee
  • Dish Soap
  • Microfiber Towels

Start by dipping your sponge into some soapy water and scrub your window down. Spend extra time near all the edges as this is where the window will be the most dirty.

Next, take your squeegee and remove all the liquid from your window. You can use straight down or side to side strokes. A slight tilt on your squeegee will help with controlling the amount of streaks.

The last step is to use one of your microfiber towels to dry around all 4 edges of the window.

How long will it take?
For a first time cleaning, expect to spend about 5 minutes per window and another 5 minutes for the screen. DIY Window Cleaning will take a few hours your first time, so leave yourself plenty of time to finish the job.
